The Arborfield Apprentice

By Pete Gripton 56B

ISBN 0954514203

wpebd0ae0c_0f.jpg

This important historical record written by ex-boy Peter Gripton was published in September 2003. With an introductory foreword by the Honourable Viscount Alanbrooke of Brookborough the book chronicles junior soldier tradesman training over a period of 60 years.

Starting with the Army Technical School in 1939 and culminating with the Army Technical Foundation College today the book is an important archive for all those who served an Army Apprenticeship or served at Arborfield.

The book is published in hard back form and contains over 500 pages and more than 200 photographs.

Peter Gripton has done a great service to all Arborfield Apprentices and staff members in writing the history and he certainly deserves the accolades of the many Old Boys who will welcome this rendering of their story. His light and readable style gives all the appearance that he enjoyed writing this history. But, bearing in mind the dictum, 'that which is written without pain will be read without pleasure' - there is ample evidence that

Peter took great pains to ensure that his readers will enjoy his book. Many of his readers will have actually made the history that he has so faithfully recorded. The author has been punctilious in awarding an equal balance to each period of time. The Army Apprentice system has been an outstanding success from its foundation. It is excellent that this chapter of a great tradition has now been recorded for posterity.

The Arborfield Apprentice is available for just £18.50 + £7.20 p&p from the Association Shop in the REME Museum of Technology at Arborfield.

The story of the War in Korea and of the part played by the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechancial Engineers, REME, from 1950 to 1953 as told by various individuals of that Corps, makes fascinating reading. The support and devotion to their colleagues is most apparent, but typical of the British soldier, these experiences are balanced with a sense of sympathy for the unfortunate Korean civilian population caught up in the conflict, and it wouldn't be a true story of the British without its sprinkling of 'squaddie' humour.

John Dutton has provided an excellent compilation of personal accounts in this comprehensive story of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers at war where the positioning of Light Aid Detachments and Field Workshops was just as important to senior commanders in their tactical planning as was the medical back-up of a Regimental Aid Post or a Field Ambulance.

This fine history costs just for just £12.50 + £3.00 p&p to members of the Arborfield Old Boys Association, members of the British Korean Veterans Association, their familes and friends when purchased from the Association Shop in the REME Museum of Technology Arborfield.
